Having been educated at Marcellin College Randwick and then graduating in Arts/Laws from Sydney University, Richard commenced his career at Dawson Waldron. He then moved to BNPParibas, initially to set up a legal department, but quickly moved into commercial banking.

Richard spent some time with the bank overseas and when he left was Deputy General Manager for Australia, with specific responsibility for its investment banking, treasury, asset management and stock broking activities.

Since leaving BNPParibas Richard has taken on non-executive directorships and is presently chairman of Commonwealth Managed Investments Ltd. Richard is also a director of Tishman Speyer Australia Ltd, Retirement Villages Australia Ltd and Catholic Church Insurances Ltd.

Richard is also involved in the not for profit sector including Director/Treasurer of Caritas, Chairman of CatholicCare, Chairman of Australian Catholic Superannuation and Retirement Fund and Chairman of the Curran Foundation.

He is a Fellow of the Australian Institute of Company Directors, Australian Institute of Management and Finisia.

Richard was a recipient in the Australia Day 2012 Honours List being awarded a Member of the Order of Australia for service to business through executive roles with financial institutions, to the law, and to the community, particularly as an adviser to the social welfare organisations of the Catholic Church in Australia. In 2008 Richard received a Papal Knighthood for his excellence in social and community roles in the fields of welfare, aid and development.

Richard is married to Katy with two married adult children and three grandchildren.
